Healthy Employees, Healthy Companies
Lower health care costs, reduced turnover, and higher employee morale—employers are finding that an investment in their employees' health can improve their company's bottom line.
A study by the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion estimated that, on average, companies could experience a $2 health care cost savings for every $1 spent on wellness programs.
"Not only does our wellness program try to reduce health care costs and sick time, and increase productivity—our ultimate goal is to create healthier, happier employees," says Andrea Hildebrand of ASA member QPS Cos. The company is a finalist for the Small Business Times's first annual Corporate Wellness Award, which is intended to recognize an organization that has done an outstanding job improving the health and wellness of its employees.
Since the formation of QPS's wellness committee in 2005, the firm has sponsored lunchtime seminars, brought in massage therapists and nutrition experts, and held a "Biggest Loser" weight-loss competition. QPS's wellness program is comprehensive, but several elements in the program are inexpensive steps that any company could take.
The company holds an annual health fair where employees can shop for area fitness centers, talk to health and beauty experts, and sample healthy meal options. And QPS supplements its wellness program by selling healthy snacks and meals to employees and putting the profits back into the program. Hildebrand says, "Supporting wellness has a positive effect—even just seeing the before and after photos from our ‘Biggest Loser' competition really proves that these programs can change people's lives for the better."
